Alibaba’s AI Expansion: Wan 2.1 Model Now Open Source for Global Use

China’s top e-commerce brand Alibaba revealed on Wednesday, a digitally engineered AI model called Wan 2.1, capable of generating videos and images, is now officially public or open source which is viewed as a strategic initiative to boost its popularity as well as the competition in the field of artificial intelligence development.
Alibaba’s release comes in for a similar move from DeepSeek, a startup whose distributions proposed earlier this year completely free of cost boasting which was received by the market and left a mark on how capital intensive technological startups like DeepSeek work, and gave results very close to market leaders such as OpenAI.
Alibaba said it has released four variants of Wan 2.1—T2V-1.3B, T2V-14B, I2V-14B-720P, and I2V-14B-480P—which generate images and videos from text and image input. The “14B” indicates the variant accepts 14 billion parameters, meaning it can process far more input to yield more accurate results. The models are available globally on Alibaba Cloud’s ModelScope and Hugging Face platforms for academic, research, and commercial use.

In January, Alibaba unveiled the most recent iteration of its AI model for creating videos and images, which it later shortened from Wanx to Wan, showcasing its capacity to produce incredibly lifelike images.

Alibaba unveiled the QwQ-Max reasoning model preview on Tuesday; the model will eventually be made open source. This week, it also revealed plans to strengthen cloud computing and AI infrastructure by investing at least 380 billion yuan ($52 billion) over the following three years.
